Work Experience
All grade 12 students with Work Experience courses on their schedules should be submitting their paperwork to the Career Centre in order to receive credit for their courses. This includes the employer’s and self-evaluations, and copies of the Resume and Community Connections Report completed in Grad Transitions.
BCIT – CSI Academy runs this summer July 9-13 and is open to students in grades 10-12. To apply student must write a $250 word essay on their future education and career goals plus provide a resume; cost of the academy is $250. Students who register before May 25, 2012 will be entered in a draw for a 1 in 16 chance to win an Amazon Kindle with a gift card for a free Forensics e-book.
Royal Soccer Club is a non-profit community organization founded with a mission to develop soccer and sport in youth through unique childcare summer camp experiences for children 5 to 13 years of age. This year RSC is hosting its 20th annual Super Summer Soccer+ Camp in one week camps run from July 3 to August 31. Students can apply for volunteers, CIT (counselors in training) and co-op positions in either morning, afternoon or full day camps. Applications are available in the Career Centre.

Fairview Elementary Track - will be hosting their meet at the school May 31 and June 1 and need student volunteers to run events. Teacher permission form required, sign up in the Career Centre.
PME Track – throughout the month of May PME will be running an in-school track meet every afternoon. Volunteers are needed to time and measure events; sign up for a day (or two) in the Career Centre, teacher permission form required.
Pitt Meadows Day is going green – volunteers are needed in several areas, but especially for the recycling information booths. The date is Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 12:30 to 5 pm. Sign up in the Career Centre.
Pitt Meadows Day – Youth Fest is looking for student to help organize the venues and bands for this year’s celebration. An interest in local bands and/or event planning would be an asset.
Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association is hosting the May Madness “C” Division tournament (May 18-21), U14 Peewee “B” Provincial Championship (July 12-15) and the U14 Peewee “A” Western Canadian Championship (Aug 2-6) at Albion Sport Complex. Volunteers needed for scorekeeping, field prep, parking, security, game announcers, set-up, teardown, opening ceremonies, shops and midway set up. Sign up in the Career Centre.
Camp Ignite – Women’s Firefighting Academy will run from August 9-12, 2012 at the Vancouver Fire Training Centre. Open to girls in grades 10-12 (ages 15-18), the camp will introduction them to the world of firefighting. Each girl will learn about fitness, nutrition, health and teamwork. Camp Ignite is brought to you by our sponsors and fire departments – so there are no costs and no barriers to participate. Applications are available in the Career Centre deadline to apply is June, 2012.
Ridge Meadows Society for Community Living – Leisure and Recreation Program for Children and Youth with Disabilities is looking for volunteers to assist in their summer camp program. The programs run in the daytime on weekdays and include community activities such as going swimming, to the movies, science world, and the aquarium, and centre based activities such as games, gymnastics, crafts and music. Volunteers must be at least 15, submit an application together with a reference, authorize a criminal records check, and letter outlining why you are interested in volunteering. Pitt Meadows Canada Day Society is looking for student volunteers to help on Sunday July 1st. There are many volunteer positions starting with set up at 5:30am and with the day ending at 5:00pm. Help make a difference in your community and share in the pride of Canada’s birthday.
Canadian Diabetes Association “Clothesline” is having their 2nd Annual “Fill a Truck Event” on Saturday, May 19th ; 10am – 2pm where Clothesline truck will be parked at various locations throughout the Lower Mainland. This special event is to help boost donations and all net proceeds from donations directly support the Canadian Diabetes Association and their world leading diabetes research, education and advocacy. They are hoping a few Pitt Meadows Secondary students could distribute flyers the week before the event in the Pitt Meadows area.
Volunteen – applications are now in for this summer’s program at Ridge Meadows Hospital. New applicants must provide a resume and 2 reference letters. Preference will be given to returning students. Application deadline is May 13, 2012.
LEAP (Leadership Ecology Adventure Program) will run this summer in Powell River from July 3-11 or July 17-25. Open to grade 10-12 students the program is free and offers students the opportunity to explore the cultural and biological ecology of the Coast Mountains and Salish. - Children and Family Research Institute is pleased to present the 2012 Celebration of Research Open House, Monday, March 5 form 9 – 12:30. PMSS is able to nominate 5 senior science students to participate in this event. Not only will the students be able to meet with UBC researchers who study children’s and women’s health but will be able to tour the research facilities. If interested please see Miss. Griffin or Brenna in the Career Centre.
- Vancouver Institute of Media Arts is offering work experience Boot Camps March 5 to 9 in two areas, “Broadcasting for Radio & TV” and “Acting for Film & TV”. Five days of hands-on-training and hours can be used for Work Experience credits. Application deadline is February 17th.
- The Art Institute of Vancouver’s SWEAT Week 2012 applications are available in the Career Centre now! During Spring break March 19-22, there are 4 day placements in a variety of programs such as Digital Film & Video, Culinary Arts, Fashion Design, Event Management, Web Design, Recording Arts, Game Art & Design, etc. Deadline for applying is February 17th.
- New Image College of Fine Arts is offering three different Boot Camps over Spring break from March 19-23. The five day, 30 hours camps are in Acting, Make-up Design, Aesthetics and Spa Camp. Limited space available so see Brenna or Miss. Griffin a.s.a.p.
- Hunter Dickson Inc. – Mineral Exploration and Mining is a Vancouver based company that is offering students the opportunity to complete work experience hours over the spring break in the following areas: 1) Communications, Public Affairs & Investor Services, 2) Engineering & Mine Development (function introduction and purpose), 3) Finance (Accounting, Tax and Risk & Compliance), 4) Geology & Technical Services,
5) Resource & Database (function introduction and purpose) and 6) Business Development. Excellent opportunity for any senior students wanting ot pursue a career in mining, finance and public relations. For more details please see Miss. Griffin or Brenna in the Career Centre. - Moli-E is willing to senior Science student interested in Physics over the spring break for a one week placement. Placements would be in the research and development departments.

RCMP Youth Academy Spring Break 2012 - this year’s applications have arrived. This year the Youth Academy will be held at the Stillwood Conference Centre, at Cultus Lake, from March 15 to 23. The Academy is up to students who are 16 years of age prior to the start of the 2011-12 school year. Application Deadline is Friday, November 15.
YOUTHINK - our school has been assigned 1 – one week placement for the student produced, monthly news magazine January 30 to February 3, 2012. If you are interested in a career in journalism this is the perfect placement for you.
Cypress Mountain – Youth WEST has two different placements this year in which a student will receive 100 hours of work experience; Snow School (skiing and snowboarding) and Mountain Services (food, rental, ticketing). All successful applicants will receive a full privilege staff pass for both Nordic and Alpine areas and 50% rentals. Applications available in the Career Centre – deadline Thursday, Nov. 10.
Grouse Mountain – Leaders in Training Program is open to students 15-18 who want to improve their own skiing and boarding skills in an attempt to obtain their certification as an instructor. Applicants must have had experience working with children 3 to 14, provide 2 reference letters, a cover letter and resume. Successful applicants will receive a Winter Season Pass and a discount on rentals, and food and beverage purchases. Applications available in the Career Centre – deadline Friday, Nov. 25
Mt. Seymour is also offering work experience placements in the Bear Cub program or as a mountain host. Applicants must be 15 or older, available to commit to at least 72 hours during the ski season. With a commitment of 72 hours the applicant will receive a ski pass for themselves, and at 92 hours their immediate family will receive a pass for the season. Applications are available on line, come into the Career Centre for more details.
Hemlock Valley is also offering a 100 hour work experience placement in any area of interest to the student. If the student does a good job they would most likely be hired the following season. Come to the Career Centre for more details.

The City of Pitt Meadows is hosting the Third Annual Pitt Meadows Christmas on December 2, 2011. Students volunteers are needed for a variety of activities; face painting, cut and serving apples and caramel sauce, first aid attendants (level 1 required or lifesaving certificate), set up and clean up. All activities take place between 12-8:30 pm. Sign up in the Career Centre.

PMSS annual Post-Secondary Day has been rescheduled to Monday, October 31st instead from Friday, November 18th. During Block C Grade 11 and 12 students will have the opportunity to attend two presentations by the attending Post-Secondary Institutes, and in Block D the grade 12 students will attend a mini-fair where they can speak to representatives from all the Institutes. Sign up for Post-Secondary Day will occur the week of October 11-15 in Grad Transitions 12 and English 11 classes.
Grade 9 Take Your Kid to Work Day will be held on Wednesday, November 2. Grade 9 students will have the opportunity to spend a day at work, job shadowing a parent, relative, or friend. Consent forms for parents and teachers will be distributed in English 9 classes the week of October 11-15. Forms must be returned to the Career Centre prior to Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Any student who does not return the forms is expected to be in attendance at school November 2.

Vancouver Opera has two 10 day work experience placements for their spring productions of The Barber of Seville (March 5-15) and Aida (April 9-19). Excellent opportunities to learn about the performance and technical aspects of a production. Applications available in the Career Centre and must be submitted ASAP.
Children Halloween Carnival hosted by RM Parks and Leisure Services is in need of volunteers to help set on Friday, October 28 (4-8:30 pm) and for the carnival itself Saturday, October 29 (11 am – 5:30 pm) in costume.
Youthink the student produced monthly magazine has a one week placement for a PMSS student the week of January 30 to February 3.
BCIT Biotechnology Week – Career Awareness Program runs this year December 12-16, 2011 and April 23-27, 2012. This program is open to grade 10, 11 and 12 students and consists of a variety of lectures, labs and industry visits all related to the biotech industry.
Students interested in being a classroom assistant at one of our feeder elementary schools may sign up in the Career Centre now.
BCIT Broadcast offers a four-day introduction to broadcasting, allowing students to sample all of the different programs offered and help decide what is right for them!
Special Olympics BC are looking for coaches and volunteers for the Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge area. This placement should be of interest to any student pursuing a career in health services (may be used for clinical hours), special education, early childhood education, recreation or coaching. Students willing to make a commitment to the program for at least one year, may have the opportunity to gain NCP Coaching Level 1 free of charge, Fall/Winter sports in need of volunteers include Active Start (2-6 year olds), FUNdamentals (7-11 year old), Curling, Swimming, 10 Pin and 5 Pin Bowling, Powerlifting and Rhythmic Gym. Science World is offering work experience placements to grade 11 and 12 students.
Customer Services, and working alongside the Customer Service Staff Members, student volunteers will provide a range of services throughout Science World intended to enhance the customer’s experience. Placements run in ten day sessions (9am-5pm) throughout the school year, with placements also available on weekends.
Ski Season – Mount Seymour, Cypress and Hemlock are all offering different work experience placements throughout the upcoming season. Not only will students get 100 hours to complete Work Experience 12, but Seymour and Cypress also award the students with a free ski pass for the season.
